Synchronet BBS Compatibility Layer (anetbbs/games/sbbs_stubs/,
anetbbs/games/sbbs_reference/)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ANetBBS can run door games and mods originally written in Synchronet's
JavaScript dialect (see docs/26-synchronet-json-rpc-doors.md and the
bundled LORD door). To do that without requiring a real Synchronet
installation, these two directories provide a compatibility layer:
some files are ANetBBS's own original code emulating Synchronet's
JS API, and others are Synchronet source itself, included so the
scripts that `load()` them keep working unmodified. sbbs_reference/
specifically holds a small set of real upstream Synchronet files kept
verbatim for developer reference; ANetBBS's own replacement
implementations (http.js, json-client.js, mouse_getkey.js,
dorkit/sbbs_input.js, etc., in sbbs_stubs/) are original code, not
copies of these.

Synchronet BBS Software Version 3 is Copyright by Rob Swindell and
distributed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 (GPLv2),
with certain listed components (XPDEV, SMBLIB, CIOLIB, UIFC, XSDK)
under the GNU Lesser General Public License instead. See
https://www.synchro.net/copyright.html for Synchronet's own statement.
A file's own header, where present, is authoritative for that file
over this general categorization.

GPLv2 (Copyright Rob Swindell / Synchronet, unless noted) --
A copy of the GPLv2 license text is at:
    anetbbs/games/sbbs_stubs/LICENSE-GPL2

  - The following files carry an intact Synchronet GPLv2 header
naming version 2 of the license directly:
      ftelnethelper.js, ircbot_commands.js, ircbot_functions.js,
      irclib.js, nodedefs.js, sbbsdefs.js, uifcdefs.js,
      user_info_to_sysop.js

  - A larger set of files (roughly 60 in sbbs_stubs/, plus most of
sbbs_reference/) carry a Synchronet CVS `$Id:` revision tag
attributing authorship to Rob Swindell ("rswindell") or other
named Synchronet contributors (e.g. "mcmlxxix"/Matt Johnson,
"deuce"/Stephen Hurd, "echicken"), but the license text itself is
not present in the file -- it appears to have been dropped
somewhere between the real Synchronet source tree and this copy.
Given the unambiguous Synchronet-tree provenance, ANetBBS treats
these the same as the files above: GPLv2, per Synchronet's own
top-level statement that "Synchronet is comprised of ... library
... and source code files, all of which are covered by version 2
of the [GPL]" except the LGPL exceptions named above (none of
which apply to these files). This list includes (non-exhaustive):
    attrdefs.js, bayes.js, bmp_lib.js, cga_defs.js, cnfdefs.js,
    cnflib.js, coldfuncs.js, cterm_lib.js, dnshelper.js, fido.js,
    fidoaddr.js, fidocfg.js, fido_syscfg.js, finger_lib.js, ftp.js,
    geoip.js, getkeye.js, gwarlib.js, hexdump_lib.js, inputline.js,
    json-db.js, key_defs.js, layout.js, lightbar.js, lockfile.js,
    mailproc_util.js, mapgenerator.js, menulib.js, mimehdr.js,
    nodelist_options.js, portdefs.js, qengine.js, relpath.js,
    salib.js, sauce_lib.js, sbbsimsg_lib.js, sbbslist_html.js,
    sbbslist_lib.js, smbdefs.js, sockdefs.js, telnet_lib.js,
    termcapture_lib.js, url.js, userdefs.js, userprops.js,
    utf8_ascii.js, utf8_cp437.js, utf8_utf16.js, vga_defs.js,
    xbimage_lib.js, xbin_defs.js, xbin_lib.js, and
    dorkit/cga_defs.js, dorkit/graphic.js; and in sbbs_reference/:
    http.js, json-db.js, json-sock.js, json-service.js,
    json-svc-ctrl.js.

  - cardlib.js carries its own, separate GPLv2 grant: "Licensed under
the GPLv2 by Randolph E. Sommerfeld <cyan@rrx.ca>". The same
GPLv2 text above applies; the copyright is Sommerfeld's, not
    Swindell's.

Other third-party licenses (each file's own header is the source
of truth; only summarized here) --

  - string.js: MIT License, Copyright (c) 2019 Behnam Mohammadi
    (via https://github.com/behnammodi/polyfill)
  - jpath.js: MIT-style permission license, Copyright (C) 2009-2011
    Bryan English
  - qrcode.js: MIT License, Copyright (c) 2009 Kazuhiko Arase
  - sha1.js: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0, (c) Chris Veness
    2002-2010 (http://www.movable-type.co.uk)
  - openweathermap.js: Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0
  - synchronet-json.js (sbbs_reference/): embeds Douglas Crockford's
json2.js, explicitly marked "Public Domain" in its own header

Everything else -- named-author files with no formal license
statement (contributors credited in file headers include
"echicken", "mcmlxxix"/Matt Johnson, "deuce"/Stephen Hurd, Michael
Long, Nelgin, and others across the wider Synchronet
door-development community), and files with no header at all --
ANetBBS has not independently obtained or confirmed a formal
license grant for. These are believed, consistent with common
practice in the Synchronet door-development community this
compatibility layer exists to support, to have been shared for use
within that ecosystem, but that belief is not a substitute for an
actual license grant. If you are the author of one of these files
and want to clarify its terms (or have it removed), please contact
ANetBBS so this notice can be corrected.

LORD (Legend of the Red Dragon) Door Game
(anetbbs/games/sbbs_doors/lord/)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
LORD is one of the most widely ported BBS door games in the hobby's
history. The version bundled with ANetBBS is a JavaScript port for
Synchronet; no formal license statement (GPL, MIT, or otherwise) is
present anywhere in its own source. Provenance, per an in-game credits
screen (grabbag/grabbag.js):

  - Original game design and 1990s DOS original: Seth Able Robinson
  - JavaScript port for Synchronet: Stephen Hurd ("Deuce")
  - lordlib.js game-data library: credited in-file to "mcmlxxix"
    (Matt Johnson)
  - Synchronet itself: Rob Swindell

This is bundled on the same informal, no-formal-license basis under
which it has circulated in the BBS community for over three decades
(LORD has been ported to dozens of BBS platforms this way). It is not
under any OSI-approved or GPL license as distributed. The optional
IGM add-ons (grabbag, outhouse, oorphans, pickle, barak, aratime,
gravyard) and the ~100 informally-licensed ANSI menu art packs under
menus/ are each separately authored, on the same freeware/shareware-
era, non-SPDX terms typical of the BBS door-game scene; several state
their own conditions in-file (e.g. a request that modified versions
be clearly marked as such and credited). One file worth flagging
specifically: pickle/LICENSE contains the unfilled-in GPLv3 template
text (the `<year>`/`<name of author>` placeholders were never
replaced) -- it does not constitute a completed, valid license grant
for pickle.js, and should not be read as one.

If you are one of the credited authors above (or represent them) and
want to clarify licensing terms for this door, please contact
ANetBBS.
